Jodhpur to Jaisalmer by Road: Route, Stops & Desert Tips

Blue City Taxi 25 June 2026 7 min read

280 km of Thar highway — where to stop, what to skip, and how to time your arrival for a Sam dunes sunset, from drivers who run this route every week.

The Route at a Glance

The standard route runs Jodhpur → Osian → Phalodi → Pokhran → Jaisalmer on good two-lane desert highway. Non-stop it's about 4.5–5 hours, but this is a drive that rewards a slow start: leave Jodhpur by 8–9 AM and the whole day opens up.

Stop 1: Osian (65 km)

An hour out of Jodhpur, Osian's 8th-century temples — especially Sachiya Mata on its hill — are the best heritage stop on the route. Give it 45–60 minutes. Some travellers also do a short camel ride on the Osian dunes here if they're skipping Sam later.

Stop 2: Pokhran

The halfway town, known for its fort and its place in modern history. The fort is a quick 30-minute visit; the roadside dhabas between Phalodi and Pokhran do honest Rajasthani food — your driver will know which ones are clean.

Timing the Sam Dunes Sunset

If you're heading straight to a desert camp, plan to pass Jaisalmer city by 4 PM — Sam is another 40 minutes west, and sunset check-ins get busy in season. We drop guests directly at their camps in Sam and Khuri, so share your camp name while booking.

Desert Driving Notes

The highway is straight and smooth but hypnotic — one reason a chauffeured cab beats self-drive here. In winter, carry a light jacket for the dunes evening; in summer, start early and keep the AC car, as dune afternoons cross 40°C. One-way drops are available if you're continuing onwards from Jaisalmer.
